The Southern Steel’s bookends and a stalwart scooped the big gongs at the franchise’s awards evening last night.
Outstanding shooter Aliyah Dunn was named the Steel’s player of the year after being the most accurate shooter in the ANZ Premiership this season.
Defender Carys Stythe was named people’s choice MVP and personality of the year.
Georgia Heffernan, who stepped up as captain with Kimiora Poi sidelined, won the Wendy Frew medal, given to the player who best demonstrates excellence, commitment and loyalty, and the community engagement award.
Stythe and Heffernan punched their tickets to the Commonwealth Games with the Silver Ferns for their brilliant seasons, while Dunn was recalled to the national side as a non-travelling reserve for the first time since 2018.
They played a big part in helping the Steel reach their first final in eight years.
The Steel’s backbone and head coach Frew was also recognised with the Rick Murrell Legacy Award, presented to the team member who best embodies loyalty, dedication, community, positivity, heart and pride.
Wing attack Serina Daunakamakama won the game changer award.
Defender Emilie Nicholson was named Southern Blast player of the year for a standout National Netball League season. Ella Mackenzie was named most improved.
