Steel captain Wendy Frew was scheduled to have surgery yesterday afternoon.

Frew ruptured her Achilles tendon in the Super Club final against the Mystics on July 7.

The Steel went on to win the match 79-58 to cap off a wonderful season in which it won all 21 games.

But the sight of Frew limping off just before halftime would have had a chilling effect on the celebrations.

The injury robbed Frew of an opportunity to push for an international recall and added to what has been a dramatic season for the veteran midcourter.

Frew and three other team-mates needed medical attention following a motor vehicle accident in Christchurch last month.

She sustained cuts to her elbow and leg and required minor surgery.

The Steel posted a picture of her on her hospital bed with the following caption: ''You are an absolute champion Wendy Frew and we are all behind you as your start this journey towards getting back out there and working your magic on the court.''

The Steel will be at the Meridian mall today to show off their trophies.

Adelaide Thunderbirds prized recruit Cathrine Tuivaiti is unlikely to play in the next Super Netball season because of a knee injury.

The Thunderbirds announced the signing of former New Zealand international Tuivaiti last Wednesday, five days after the goal shoot injured a knee in her last game for Central Pulse in NZ.

Scans showed Tuivaiti had ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament and required a knee reconstruction, the Thunderbirds said yesterday.
