Carisbrook to supply beverages in plastic bottles

The can has been canned.

The Otago Rugby Football Union announced yesterday patrons at Carisbrook would have all beverages, including beer, supplied in plastic bottles, with cans to disappear.

Prices have yet to be announced for the plastic bottles.

Soft drinks, water, wine, and beer will be provided in various sizes for all events, including Super 14 matches, Air New Zealand Cup games and tests.

The first major event to use the plastic bottles will be the Crusty Demons performance tomorrow night.

Senior Sergeant Phil McDouall, of South Dunedin, said Carisbrook was the last of the major sports venues in New Zealand to make the transition from cans to plastic.

Union marketing manager Chris Green said the move had been made in the best interest of the public who attend games - plastic bottles were much safer than full cans.

"We know of no incidents around New Zealand where plastic bottles have caused problems, and having Carisbrook now with plastic will ensure consistency across all grounds," Green said.

The major change is a slight increase in the size of the units in the beer bottles; each bottle holds 375ml compared to a standard can size of 335ml.

The bottles will be dispensed in either single units or packs of four.
