Curling: Ranfurly school wins title

Tim McMillan (17), of Ranfurly, Willie Miller (15), of Ranfurly, Liam Dowling (16), of Wedderburn, and Sam Miller (17), of Ranfurly, won every round-robin curling match they played during the three-day New Zealand secondary-school championships held at Naseby.

Twelve teams of curlers from throughout the country competed in the tournament, which was played at the Maniototo International Curling Rink on October 9, 10 and 11.

Four girls teams entered, all from Auckland secondary schools.

The Epsom 2 team won the title, followed by Baradene, Epsom 1 and Epsom 3.

Auckland was also well represented in the boys competition, with three of the eight teams entered.

Other boys teams were made up of pupils from Alexandra, Ranfurly and Dunedin secondary schools.

In second place, after Maniototo, was Massey, of Auckland, followed by Dunstan, of Alexandra (third), and Kelston Red, of Auckland (fourth).

Fifth was team Otago Boys 1, of Dunedin, followed by Kelston Blue, of Auckland (sixth), John McGlashan, of Dunedin (seventh), and Otago Boys 2 (eighth).

It was the first time Central Otago had staged the annual event.
