Dunedin diver Drew Schievink will face the biggest test of his career when he competes at the Australian junior elite championships in Sydney next week.

He is one of six divers from New Zealand competing in the event against the best age group divers in the Pacific region.

Schievink (13) has already competed internationally - last year, he competed in an international event in Singapore and at the Australian Schools Games in Adelaide - but the junior elite event is a step up and will test his skills and his temperament.

He will have the support of his mother, Trudy, who will be attending as his coach.

The competition starts on Tuesday and continues until the end of the month.

Drew Schievink gained selection for the event after winning three gold medals in the boys aged 13 and under grade at the New Zealand championships in Wellington late last month.

He won the 1m (267.90 points), 3m (292.25m) and platform (227.90m). His best performance was in the 3m when he achieved a personal best score.

Fellow Dunedin diver Kate Bryant (11) also performed with distinction at her first national championships.

She was competing in the girls aged 11 and under silver skills testing grade and won gold medals in the 1m (189.65 points) and 3m (120 points) and was second in the platform with 107.50 points.

She is the daughter of former national champion and New Zealand representative Katrina Bryant.
