The leaders after the first day, Keegan Wright (pictured), of Rotorua, and Katy Winton, of Scotland, maintained their advantage on the trail rides down Signal Hill yesterday to win the event.
Wright (21) led by 13 seconds after the first day and that was the advantage he had at the finish after the three rides down Signal Hill. He had three wins and a second on Saturday. Winton, who is the world No 3 in the discipline, was surprised to be leading after the first day, saying she found the trails "quite niggly". Winton (24) led by 35 seconds after the opening day and maintained that time advantage on the second day.
The hot weather over the weekend made it tough going for many riders. Shannon Hope, of Dunedin, was sitting third overall in the women’s division but had a nasty crash 50m from the end in the final stage and was taken to Dunedin Hospital, where she was checked and discharged, yesterday.
