New Zealand ended their campaign at the world kayaking championships without a medal after women's pair Teneale Hatton and Lisa Carrington failed to mount a challenge in last night's (NZT) K2 500m final in Poland.

Hatton and Carrington were ninth and last, having trailed the high-class field from the outset.

Their time of one minute 44.932 seconds was nearly 5sec behind winners Gabriella Szabo and Danuta Kozak, who held off crews from Russia and Austria.

The New Zealanders couldn't repeat their heroics in France in May when they won gold at a World Cup regatta in Vichy.

They were the only crew to reach the A final in a disappointing New Zealand campaign.

The sport endured a tumultuous year, struggling for success aside from the gold in Vichy, while having to publicly deal with a falling out between national coach Ian Ferguson and former Olympic silver medallist Ben Fouhy.

Five of the six crews competing on Poznan's Lake Malta could only reach B finals.

Earlier tonight, Olympian Erin Taylor was second in her K1 500m B final, pipped by China's Yu Zhou.

The K4 500m crew of Taylor, Hatton, Carrington and Jaimee Lovett also managed a second placing in their B final, beaten home by Russia.

On Saturday, the three men's crews completed their B finals with Ben Fouhy 3rd in the K1 1000m, Steven Ferguson and Troy Burbidge 5th in the K2 1000m while the K4 1000m crew of Michael Walker, Liam O'Loughlin, Frederick Teear and Darryl Fitzgerald were sixth.
