Otago swimmers have produced another strong showing at the national age group championships.
Athletes brought home eight medals and broke four Otago records at the championships held in Hawke’s Bay, finishing on Sunday.
Neo Salomonsson (male 14 years) had a great outing, breaking two Otago records and picking up two silver medals.
The Kiwi club swimmer broke the 50m butterfly record with 27.51sec, clipping 0.27 sec off the previous record he set earlier this year, and the 100m butterfly record, finishing in 1min 1.10sec. He beat Jaxson MacDonald-Piner’s record, set in 2015, by 0.33sec.
Salomonsson picked up a silver in the 200m fly and in the male 15 years and under 4x100m medley relay with Alfie Weatherston-Harvey, Taka Sugiyama and Noah Brummitt.
Weatherston-Harvey (male 15 years) also won bronze in the 800m freestyle.
Alexandra’s Liam Rees (male 16 years) won bronze in the 100m backstroke and broke an Otago record in the 200m backstroke.
He finished in 2min 10.9sec, breaking Andrew Trembath’s record (2min 10.44sec) set in 2013.
Team-mate Heidi Winter (female 14 years) also won bronze in the 100m freestyle.
Three Neptune swimmers picked up medals. Emilia Finer (female 17-18 years) won silver in the 400 Individual medley, William McFarlane (male 14 years) won bronze in the 400m freestyle, and Daniel Gilbert (male 17-18 years) won bronze in the 200m butterfly.
Poppy Henderson (female 17 years) broke the 100m butterfly record finishing in 1min 3.58sec. She shaved 0.02sec off Kate Kenneally’s record set in 2009.
