It was a significant milestone for Otago cue sports in Tokoroa last weekend when Adam Marlow became the first player from the province to win the New Zealand 8-ball pool title.

Marlow (32), a Dunedin credit manager, beat Mat Edwards (Christchurch) 7-5 in a closely fought final.

The former English international has made a big impact on the local sport since settling in Dunedin eight months ago.

He is a member of the Cue Room Slayers team in the Dunedin Pool Association competition.

"That win means more to me than what I achieved in the United Kingdom," he said.

"I like the country and want to stay here and put Dunedin on the pool map."

Marlow is on a working visa and is going through the process to get New Zealand residency.

"I like the way of life, the quality of life and the pace of life here," he said.

"It is not the rat race that there is in the United Kingdom."

Marlow has had a long apprenticeship in cue sports since he started playing pool and snooker at the age of 5 in his home town of Milton Keynes in England.

He was a professional pool player for seven years from 2001 to 2007, during which time he was a member of the England team that won a gold medal at the European championships.

His best individual performance was to finish in the top 32 at the world championships and reach the quarterfinals at the European championships.

Marlow never won an English title but was runner-up in major United Kingdom tournaments on several occasions.

"I just loved playing snooker and pool when I was growing up and my hero was Steve Davis, who was the six-time world champion," Marlow said.

The pool player he admired most in England was Jimmy White, a fellow left-hander.
