Otago schools were to the fore at the national schools curling championships in Auckland.

Kavanagh College won the girls grade while John McGlashan College was the victor in the boys grade, beating Maniototo Area School in the final on Monday.

The Kavanagh College team won through to the final and just got home 6-5 over Epsom Girls Grammar, from Auckland, in a nail-biter of a final.

The Dunedin team scored two points on the final end to win the national title.

The Kavanagh team, which was made up of Temika Bishop (15), Emily Armstrong (16), Elizabeth Audas (15) and Grace Bishop (15), was the youngest in the girls grade.

The John McGlashan College team comprised Bailey Dowling, Thomas Johnston, Jack Hutton-Aitkins and Will Turner.

It beat the Maniototo team of Will Becker, Sam Flanagan, Ben Vocie and Damian Carson.

In the final, John McGlashan scored three points in the fourth and fifth ends to beat Maniototo 6-5.

The championships were played at the ice stadium in Avondale in Auckland.
