Otago's best female swimmer, Kate Godfrey (Neptune), will be tested by Canterbury opponents this weekend.

The open women's races will be the feature events at the 30th annual Queen's Birthday Carnival at Moana Pool.

Godfrey (19), a member of Gennadiy Labara's Osca squad for the past six years, will be pitted against talented Canterbury swimmers Natasha Lloyd (North Canterbury) and Sophia Batchelor (Aquagym).

She was Otago's best swimmer at the New Zealand open championships in Auckland last March and won the province's only gold medal at the championships in the 200m individual medley in a time of 2min 17.87sec.

It was one of her three qualifying times for the World University Games in Russia in July.

The other qualifying long course times were in the 100m backstroke (1min 03.04sec) and the 200m backstroke (2min 15.46sec), where she won silver medals.

Her biggest test will be against Lloyd (17), a pupil at St Andrew's College, who won a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke at the Australian Youth Olympics.

The Neptune Carnival is a short-course event. That will suit Lloyd, who is a master of the underwater swim.

Godfrey has a best pre-event 200m individual medley short course time of 2min 14.32sec and Lloyd 2min 14.69sec.

They will also meet in the 50m freestyle, where Lloyd has the advantage. Her pre-event time is 26.59sec and Godfrey's is 27.08sec.

Godfrey is also on the wrong side of the equation when pitted against Sophia Batchelor in the 200m backstroke. Batchelor's best time is 2min 4.13sec and Godfrey's is 2min 10.16sec.

They also race each other in the 100m butterfly, where Batchelor's best time is 58.24sec compared to Godfrey's 1min 01.39sec.

Godfrey is out by herself in the 400m individual medley with her best time of 4min 43.80sec.

There are 352 swimmers from 26 clubs entered in the event at Moana Pool. This includes strong teams from the Canterbury clubs of Jasi, North Canterbury, Aquagym and Wharenui.

Otago's best male swimmer is Kurt Crosland (Neptune), who won four individual medals (two silver and two bronze) in Auckland.

Crosland (29) qualified for the World University Games in Russia but was told he was too old for the event.

He is matched against Southland's Michael Finlay (Orca) this weekend. The closest race will be the 100m freestyle, where Crosland has a time of 50.44sec and Finlay 50.72sec. In the 50m freestyle, Crosland is timed at 22.90sec and Finlay 23.01sec.

Crosland is out by himself in the 200m backstroke with 1min 55.42sec.

The other Otago individual medallist in the national open championships was Matthew Glassford (Neptune), who won a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke in 2min 17.01sec.

He is matched against Canterbury's George Schroder (Aquagym) in the breaststroke events. Glassford has the advantage in the 200m with his time of 2min 13.01sec compared to Schroder's 2min 15.33sec. Schroder has the edge in the 100m with a time of 1min 02.22sec compared to Glassford's 1min 02.46sec.

St Kevin's College pupil Isobel Ryan (Oamaru) is expected to dominate the girls aged 15 and 16 events. Her toughest race will be the 50m freestyle, where she is timed at 26.03sec. Neptune's Aleisha Ruske is at 26.76sec.

Other swimmers to watch are Han Zhang (Neptune) in the boys aged 15 and 16 events, Sophie Gibson (Queenstown) in the girls aged 15 and 15 grade and Sophie Fairbairn (Wanaka) in the girls aged 13 and 14 section.
