Water skiing: Capacity field for school competition

A capacity field of 30 will face the starter in the fourth annual Otago-Southland secondary schools water ski championships, at Perkins Pond, Miller Flat, on Sunday.

Twenty-one competitors started in the first annual championships in 2010 and the event has grown in popularity since that time.

There are three grades for the individual championship events for boys and girls - under-18, under-16 and under-13.

There are also similar age grades for novices and a team event over all the grades for all competing teams.

The course is on Perkins Pond, which has been built on a sheep farm near Millers Flat. It is the venue for a junior water ski school that is run at the pond.

All the top schools in Otago and Southland have entered competitors for an event, to be held on a course that includes six buoys.

Last year's senior champions in the under-18 grade were Chris Maunsell (Otago Boys' High School) and Philippa Dingle (St Hilda's Collegiate School).
