Drivers' title priority for Orange - for now

The chance to set up his family's future is the driving force behind Blair Orange becoming only the second driver in New Zealand to win 200 races in a season.

Orange joined his good friend, Dexter Dunn, in the 200-win club with a haul of five winning drives at Manawatu on Tuesday.

The achievement topped a whirlwind season of success, driving winners at a rate seemingly impossible for anyone else bar Dunn.

To complete the feat was not in Orange's wildest dreams when he started his driving career.

The thought of doing it at Manawatu was simply unthinkable, Orange said.

''It's a great milestone and obviously only Dexter has done it before, so it is something you never thought you would do.''

Looking to the long term, Orange has bought a 50% share in Toliman Lodge at West Melton to become trainer Ken Barron's new business partner, taking over from Tony Barron.

Orange will be heavily involved in training horses, though he is not joining Barron in a training partnership.

Tony Barron will set up a new training property.

Looking to the future with wife Lisa, son Harrison, and daughter Lily made the decision to invest in the training establishment an easy one, Orange said.

In time, he would shift his main focus to his new training venture, he said.

Orange has been working at Toliman Lodge since 2014, after 12 years at Mark Purdon's All Stars stable.

In the five seasons since the move, he has been an unstoppable force in the sulky, winning 746 races.

He has tripped around New Zealand at a relentless rate while working for the Barrons during the week.

That schedule would be enough to exhaust many, but Orange is holding up well with the support of his family.

''Probably my wife cops me on my grumpy days,'' he quipped

He revealed a secret weapon - his ability to power-nap anywhere.

''I can sleep anywhere. You try to get an hour here and an hour.''

With Dexter Dunn declaring his season will be over soon after next month's Harness Jewels, Orange has this year's drivers premiership wrapped up.

That means Dunn's all-time record of 229 for most wins in a season is in Orange's sights.

''The premiership has always been the goal for me for a little while now. If the other record comes, then so be it.''

Though there have been dozens of wins between the pair at various stages of the season, this season's drivers' premiership battle between Orange and Dunn has captivated harness racing fans.

Orange is highly likely to end Dunn's 10-year hold on the premiership, but they are firm friends who travel the country together.

''To be honest we don't really talk about it - everyone else does. It has never come between our friendship, that is for sure.''
