First race rides

Ali Nor has the mount on last-start winner Miss Millbrook in his first day of race riding at Wingatui on Sunday.

Nor (27) was licensed as an apprentice yesterday.

He also has the mount on Jack Downey.

Nor became apprenticed to Wingatui trainer Terry Kennedy in October, replacing Zman Zulkifli, who returned to Malaysia.

Nor came to New Zealand from Malaysia three years ago and worked in a pre-training establishment in the Waikato.

He rode at trials in the Waikato.

He won a trial on the Kennedy-trained 2yr-old Robert Brook at Wingatui on December 8.

Robert Brook (No Excuse Needed-Somehow) has his first start on Sunday.

Doris Brook, who will wear blinkers, is another prospect for the stable and owner Fred King.

Riccarton trainer Richard Didham is based at Wingatui with Ace Of Diamonds, Sneaky and Kemdale for the meeting on Sunday.

Ace Of Diamonds won easily at Gore last Sunday when Sneaky ran third fresh up.

Kemdale raced below expectations and he will have a gear change, side winkers instead of blinkers and a change of rider, Jamie Bates.

Shaun McGarry has engaged apprentice Centaine Spittles for St Bernard with the 53kg precluding Chris Johnson taking the mount.

St Bernard, winner of his last two starts, was taken to the beach yesterday.

Paula Dowling, a successful jockey when based at Wingatui, is back there riding work on a holiday.

She is now based in France.

"It is an excuse to escape the winter," she said.

She is accompanied by her financee, Gael Lemer.

They assist his father, Thierry, with training 45 thoroughbreds at La-Teste, near Bordeaux.

Dowling is licensed to ride in France, but she only takes the odd mount.

Lemer is finding the routine different: "We have some 12 track work riders and only ride about four horses a morning, giving each horse a lot more time," he said.
