The Otago harness racing community is mourning the loss of Forbury Park Trotting Club general manager Rodney Moore, who died on Saturday.

After battling cancer over the past year, Moore died peacefully in Dunedin, aged 62.

He would be sadly missed by the Dunedin harness racing fraternity, Peter Gillespie, chairman of the Forbury Park Trotting Club board of management, said.

"It is so tragic. The members and the board and the committee are all feeling it," he said.

"We are all feeling pretty empty, really.

"The club’s thoughts are with his family in Wellington and his partner, Brita, and their family in Dunedin."

Gillespie described Moore as a highly popular people person.

"He was a real manager of people; that is why everyone has taken this quite hard.

"As a person, his management style was to involve people and get alongside people and he was a friend to everyone.

"I think that was instrumental in getting the club out of the position it was."

Moore started as general manager at the Forbury Park club in June, 2016, after a stint at the University Of Otago.

Before that, he had 10 years working at Wellington Cricket.

The Forbury Park Trotting Club posted a surplus, turning around a massive $300,000 deficit, in Moore’s first year at the club.

"He turned around a significant loss into a healthy profit in one year," Gillespie said.

"He had only been at the club for two years and he has been at the core turning around the club’s fortunes.

"I had the greatest amount of respect for him."

Trainer Geoff Knight said Moore had the respect of southern horsemen and was highly professional in his dealings.

"He was a true-blue gentleman. He was new to harness racing and he embraced it.

"He was a people person and very professional and got the job done."

Moore is survived by three children and his partner, Brita Fields.

His funeral will be held in Dunedin on Friday. Moore took a leave of absence from his role at Forbury Park earlier this year. Tom Conroy has acted as interim general manager of the club since March.
