Gore galloper Point Score showed punters got their aim wrong when flashing home to win at Omakau yesterday for the group of Southland clay target shooters that race him.

Members of the 13-strong Double Barrel Syndicate showed pinpoint accuracy to back the 4yr-old, who scored a highly impressive win at $34 odds.

Point Score unleashed a huge finish from the rear of the field to win in maiden company over 1400m in race 2 for trainer Ellis Winsloe and rider Kylie Williams.

Syndicate manager Willie Watson said confidence levels were not high going into the race, despite the group knowing they had a talented horse.

"Some of the boys backed him, but we weren’t overly confident of winning,” Watson said.

"We knew the horse had ability, but he had a bit of a problem in his last race where he was holding his breath.

"Ellis has just been teaching him about racing and when he learns it I think we are going to have a bit of fun with him."

Point Score is named after a clay target shooting event the syndicate members compete in regularly at events around Otago and Southland.

The group includes former New Zealand representatives.

Winsloe is also a keen clay target shooter, and competes in competitions alongside the owners.

The syndicate began when one of its members, John Smith, approached Watson with the idea of racing a horse with his fellow competitors.

The Double Barrel syndicate has a 100% strike rate, having won with both of the horses it has raced.

The group scored two wins from 36 starts with Gallant Guru galloper Smokem Up.

Smokem Up is also named after a clay target shooting term.

A target that disintegrates after being hit squarely in its middle is considered to be "smoked".

The group acquired Point Score from Winsloe, who bred the horse with Hakataramea owners Barry and Heather Gray.

The 4yr-old is by Ekraar from the Anziyan mare The Top Hat.

"He is out of a mare from the Dennis brothers’ breed," Watson said.

"He is bred to stay, so it looks like we could have a bit of fun, I would say."

Trainers John and Karen Parsons continued their trend of winning southern cup races with former North Island horses at Omakau yesterday.

The trainers took out the Central Otago Summer Cup with Kilarney, just two days after winning the Waikouaiti Cup with Camino Rocoso.

Kilarney has produced excellent South Island form since having his first start for the Parsons in September after campaigning in the North Island.

Kilarney won the 1400m feature by two-and-a-half lengths over Jim’s Gift for rider Tina Comignaghi.

The Parsons-Comignaghi combination also took out race 6 with Jack Be Quick.
