Racing: Bart backs colt to run two miles

Trainer Bart Cummings says he is "certain" his Melbourne Cup favourite colt So You Think has the staying power to run 3200 metres.

So You Think is the shortest priced Cup favourite in nearly 40 years, and a win would give Cummings a 13th Melbourne Cup triumph.

"Definitely, I am very, very certain he has (the endurance). He's ready to go two miles or further. That's what I bought him for and that's what we aim to do tomorrow," Cummings told ABC TV.

"He accepts the fact that he just settles in his stride and he'll go all day doing it, that's why I think he'll get the two mile no trouble."

Cummings said ideally he would like to see So You Think in about 10th place 500 metres into the race but he would leave it to jockey Steve Arnold:

"He knows what to do, I'll have a talk with him. We'll sort it out".

The legendary trainer was speaking after being released from hospital, having battled with a chest infection.

He said he would definitely be at Flemington on Tuesday and he also liked his other runner Precedence's chances.

"I'm ready for another win," he said. "He (Precedence) likes the wet, he's bred to stay, two miles will be right up his alley.

"If you've got some money to spare, take the quinella."

Tuesday's Melbourne Cup is being described as having the strongest field in more than a decade and the wet condition of the track would suit the imported horses, Cummings said.

"It might be better for us if it does dry out a little bit, I really think it doesn't matter a great deal as my two horses do like it," he said.

Other than his own horses, Cummings said he rated last year's winner Shocking's chances and thought Geelong Cup winner Americain was the best of the foreign horses.
