Racing: Don Nyhan dies

Don Nyhan, who trained Johnny Globe and Lordship, two of the greatest pacers to have raced in New Zealand, died in Christchurch yesterday at the age of 99.

Nyhan raced Johnny Globe and drove the son of Logan Derby and Sandfast.

Johnny Globe won the 1954 New Zealand Cup from a 48yd (44m) handicap in world record time of 4.07 3-5 for the two miles (3200m).

He won 34 races, including 15 free-for-alls from 99 starts.

He was four times leading New Zealand sire when stood by Nyhan.

Johnny Globe sired among others Lordship, who was raced by Doris Nyhan, wife of Don.

She died two years ago.

Lordship won the New Zealand Cup in 1962 and 1966 when driven by their son, Denis. Lordship won under free-for-all conditions as a 3yr-old against older horses at Addington in May, 1962.

He won the NZ Free-For-All in 1962, '64 and '67.

Lordship also became a leading sire when based at the Globe Lodge Stud of Nyhan at Templeton.

Another of his progeny, Koarakau, won the 1973 NZ Derby when trained by Don and driven by son Barry.

Don raced a top pacer, Gold Flight, in the early 1940s.

Denis is the trainer-driver of With Intent, a form runner in race five at Ashburton today.
