Racing: Final Touch in Cuddle Stakes

Final Touch was switched to the Cuddle Stakes from the Lightning Handicap at Trentham on Saturday after the announcement of weights yesterday.

"We had planned to run in the Lightning Handicap (1200m) but not with 59kg," Karen Parsons, the co-trainer and owner of Final Touch said.

Final Touch has 56kg in the Cuddle Stakes, run at set weights with penalties, for mares over 1600m.

Buddy Lammas has retained the mount.

• Bel Sprinter is Sydney-bound after trainer Jason Warren ruled out a clash with Hay List in the group one William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley tomorrow night.

Warren is targeting the $100,000 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on March 24.

The Sebring Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on April 7 and The Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick on April 21 are also on the agenda.

Bel Sprinter missed the Newmarket Handicap last Saturday due to a minor hock injury.

"I don't think we should be running against Hay List at weight-for-age," Warren said.

"I'm happy for him [Bel Sprinter] to run against him in a handicap."

Bel Sprinter won the Adams Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield fresh up last month.

• Manawanui and Mosheen, the well-fancied runners, have both drawn wide in the Randwick Guineas on Saturday.

Manawanui drew 11 in a field of 17 for the $500,000 race. Last-start Australian Guineas winner Mosheen, drew 14.

Hobartville Stakes winner Wild And Proud will have to contend with the outside gate. The Spring Champion Stakes winner Doctor Doom has drawn one.

Peter Snowden has four runners.

The Guineas meeting will be the first held at Randwick since the course was closed in November for work on a $150 million redevelopment of facilities.

• Lisa Cropp has accepted a contract to ride in Turkey.

Cropp has been based in Melbourne in recent months.

Cambridge apprentice Maija Vance is on loan to Brisbane trainer Laurie Mayfield-Smith for three months.

Vance is indentured to Chris McNab.

• Natasha Collett was suspended from Sunday until midnight the following Thursday for careless riding at Te Awamutu on Tuesday. She admitted allowing her mount Adhira to shift in at the 1200m and check My Byron Bay and Brick House.

• So Swift, winner of the Sandown Guineas, will begin an autumn campaign in the Bendigo Guineas on Saturday.

He has the South Australian Derby in May as his main mission.

"He didn't spell all that well. The horse does a lot better when he's in work and we're very happy with him," Symon Wilde, his Warrnambool trainer, said.

"He had a quiet jumpout at Camperdown last week where he rolled around and went really well.

"He's probably going to find the 1400m of this race a bit short for him."

• Trainer Rob Heathcote has high hopes for Rock Academy who won at his first start at Doomben yesterday.

"It's been my experience that they've got to be very smart to win on debut," Heathcote said.

"I've had horses like Buffering, Woorim and Funtantes all win their debuts and they've gone on to be very smart and this bloke will, hopefully, go the same way.

"It was a very tidy performance and he did everything right."

Rock Academy, ridden by Damian Browne, won by a long neck over 1020m.

"He's only going to get better with racing," Browne said.

"He got through the wet track OK but he'll be better on top of the ground," he said.

Rock Academy was bought for $150,000 by Grant Morgan's Ontrack Thoroughbreds at the ready-to-run sale at the Gold Coast in 2010.

"He's been a work in progress and has been fairly dopey," Morgan said.

"He was originally with Trevor Bailey before he moved to Newcastle.

"Trevor did a great job with him before he left about six weeks ago but the owners voted to keep him in Queensland, rather than go south."

Morgan's Ontrack Thoroughbreds' team has 20 horses, seven of them stabled with Heathcote.
