Mike and Sue McGuire, the Rakaia owners, continued a good innings when Rosemma won the race for 2yr-old trotters at Rangiora yesterday.

The McGuires have also won races this season with Sonofanearl, The Real McGuire and Pretty Sunday. Sonofanearl and The Real McGuire are trained at Ashburton by John Hay, who prepares Rosemma. The daughter of Monarchy and Sun Mist was having her third start. She was a $24,000 purchase at the premier yearling sale when offered by Michelle Craig, of Winton.

Rosemma is the fourth foal of her dam and a half-sister to Sonofanearl (by Earl), who has won seven races.

• Supreme Mach, the 2yr -old pacer who won his first start yesterday and racing against older horses, was a $30,000 purchase at the Ready To Run Sale last October by owners Grant Dickey, of Christchurch, and Ed and Carolyn Wardwell, of the Virgin Islands. Supreme Mach is trained by Ken Barron, who has prepared numerous winners for the same owners.

Supreme Mach is by Mach Three and the third foal of Lauriston Supreme, by Badlands Hanover. He was bought for $12,000 by Michael House at the premier yearling sale when offered by Mike Stratford, of Classiebawn Stud.

• Christchurch owners Clive and Rona McKay and their daughter, Sharon, had a quick return when Franco Nelson won the $40,000 New Zealand Welcome Stakes at Addington on Friday night. They bought a half share in Franco Nelson from Spreydon Lodge Ltd on Friday afternoon. The Christian Cullen-Notafella Franco colt trained by Steven McRae and a winner of his other start, has the Australasian Breeders' Crown on his agenda.

• Invercargill trainer Murray Brown won four races on his home track yesterday, taking his tally for the season to 26. Brown won with Johns Anne, Franco Caliph, Sharpenuff and Compton Street. Johns Ann, a 3yr-old filly having her second start, is out of Be Not Afraid, the winner of nine races as a trotter. She was trained for her last eight wins by Wayne Adams at Invercargill.

• Stylish Monarch will not race again this season after leg issues, Murray Tapper, his Levels trainer, said.

"He was scratched on Friday because he was sore in a hind leg but I am not concerned about that. He has damaged a suspensory ligament in front and that has been a concern for some time."

Tapper said he would put Stylish Monarch aside for six or seven weeks and have the leg scanned.

Stylish Monarch won a heat of the Interdominion at Ballarat in January, taking his stake earnings to $499,819.

Tapper will race Phil's Gift at Forbury Park on Thursday night.

"We are hoping to get a start with him in the Harness Jewels," Tapper said.

Phil's Gift ran third to Paramount Geegee and Thanesan in the New Zealand Trotting Derby at his last start. He has won three races, including his first start at Forbury Park in August.
