Racing: 'Honest wee horse' produces 10th career win

Our Bee Jay may have been racing since he was a juvenile, but he's still producing his best for Ascot Park trainer Lisa Vaughan.

The 7yr-old gained his 10th win at his 47th career start when he led all the way to beat his rivals in the 2000m open handicap.

''He's been a real honest wee horse - he's raced honestly from a 2yr-old right until he was 7,'' Vaughan said.

Our Bee Jay had warmed up for his Riccarton assignment with a meritorious second behind Final Touch at Wingatui last week, but Vaughan did have her concerns before the race.

''I was a wee bit worried going into this one. I would have rather stepped up to a mile than to 2000m.''

Vaughan's concerns were not placated either when Our Bee Jay jumped well from the 2000m start point.

''He normally gets back and gets a bit of cover, so I was a bit worried when I saw him out pulling to get to the front.

''He's such a wee dude of a horse and tries hard every time.''

Vaughan, who races the son of Danske with her partner, former All Black first-five Simon Culhane, said she might scrap plans to race Our Bee Jay on Saturday.

''I had him nominated in the rating 85 on Saturday and he's third on the ballot in the open, but we probably won't run now.

''I've put a nomination in for the Wellington Cup later on in January just in case but I haven't mapped out a programme for him yet.''
