Fixed-odds markets for the Harness Jewels are set to open this afternoon, and there are several Otago horses still in contention for a start on Queen's Birthday weekend at Ashburton. Racing writer Matt Smith looks at how the markets might shape up, and how many local horses have a chance at the 12 prizes on offer.

2yr-old pacing fillies

Likely favourite: Venus Serena

Roughie: Te Amo Bromac

Otago chances: The Tapanui-owned Rocknroll Arden is sitting in third for Rolleston trainer Mark Purdon. Next best is The Jinja Ninja, but she looks out of contention in 45th.

3yr-old pacing fillies

Likely favourite: Adore Me

Roughie: Kabet

Otago chances: None

4yr-old pacing mares

Likely favourite: Elusive Chick

Roughie: Pemberton Shard

Otago chances: The Geoff and Jude Knight-trained mare Royal Impression is rated 10th, and you should get some juicy double-figure odds around her.

5yr-old pacing mares

Likely favourite: Bettor Cover Lover

Roughie: Southwind Arden

Otago chances: Better To Be Bad (4th) has done a stellar job this season for Portobello trainer Steve Ashton. She'll be right in it if the race turns into a brawl. Just Rose, now with Graeme Anderson and Amber Hoffman, sits 10th, but it remains to be seen if she will continue on to the Harness Jewels. Not Sure (31st) will need two quick wins - starting at Forbury Park on Friday - to have a chance of making the field.

2yr-old pacing colts/geldings

Likely favourite: Allblack Stride

Roughie: Sky Major

Otago chances: Someardensomewhere (21st) was bred and is owned in Tapanui, but will need to win about $8000 in the next 10 days.

3yr-old pacing colts/geldings

Likely favourite: Ohoka Punter

Roughie: Classiesistar

Otago chances: Expressionist (33rd) is almost $18,000 off 12th spot and can't qualify.

4yr-old pacing colts/geldings

Likely favourite: Christen Me

Roughie: Ellmer Hanover

Otago chances: None

5yr-old pacing colts/geldings

Likely favourite: Terror To Love

Roughie: Jarcullembra

Otago chances: Anderson/Hoffman pacer Ballindooley (5th) is assured of his spot thanks to his impressive 2013 form, including a track record at Forbury Park last week.

2yr-old trotters

Likely favourite: One Over Da Moon

Roughie: Schleck

Otago chances: Any juvenile trotter who runs in the first three in the next 10 days could sneak into the field, including the Alan Clark-trained Mr Majestic (18th)

3yr-old trotters

Likely favourite: Blitzthemcalder

Roughie: Prime Power

Otago chances: Pyramid Monarch (16th) and Monty Python (18th) will need a win before May 19 to get into the field for Phil Williamson.

4yr-old trotters

Likely favourite: Stent

Roughie: Trip's On Me

Otago chances: Phil Williamson has Miss Pegasus (10th) all but qualified, while Galleon's Triumph (17th) is looking to make up a $4200 deficit on 12th place at Addington on Friday. Dwindle Mist (21st) will need two wins and some withdrawals.

5yr-old trotters

Likely favourite: Springbank Sam

Roughie: Irish Whisper

Otago chances: Springbank Sam (1st) leads the way for Phil Williamson, while Monnay (3rd) is also well up the leaderboard. Jonny Cox has Jess Jaccka (6th) set for a Jewels tilt, while So King (8th) is in form after winning at Forbury Park last week for Tahakopa trainer Brian Norman.

Anchor for your multi: Adore Me (3yr-old pacing fillies).
