Lautenschlager dominates the Otago Steeplechase at Wingatui tomorrow after a winning double over country at Riverton last month.

Jo Rathbone, who rode him in both those wins including the Great Western Steeple, has retained the mount.

Swift Fantasy could retire in a blaze of glory by winning the $75,000 Duke Of Edinburgh Silver Collar at the Auckland greyhound meeting tomorrow.

Swift Fantasy won the race in 2010 and finished second to Nina's Girl last year.

Len Stewart, who trained the good galloper Maclane in the 1970s, was back in the winner's circle at Washdyke yesterday with Urbana.

Stewart won 16 races, including the 1975 Dunedin Cup, 1974 North Canterbury Cup and 1973 Hororata Cup with Maclane. He leased Maclane as a 5yr-old after the Kurdistan-Flying Time gelding had won two races for owners Ken McLaughlin and Ken Lane from the Washdyke stable of Peter Hampton.

"I did work for them pre-training and with horses that had broken down. I wanted to lease another horse they had, Robbie Burns, when they offered me Maclane, who had let them down when they had bet on him," Stewart recalled.

"I felt there was something wrong with Maclane and I consulted Bill Sanders (a leading trainer at Te Awamutu and former chemist). He sent me powders and I treated Maclane for something like hepatitis which affected his liver."

Maclane won the Westland Country Centennial Handicap at Hokitika as a 9yr-old.

Stewart tried Robbie Burns as a 7yr-old and 8yr-old but the Jekyll gelding was of no account.

Stewart gave away training after he won a race with Regal Manor at Invercargill in 1990.

The 79-year-old renewed his licence two years ago encouraged by his granddaughter, Lacey, being keen to take on training.

She has a share in Urbana, with Jess Wederell, of Timaru, Brent Williams, of Christchurch and Hawarden breeder Tim Kelly.

Urbana, who was having her sixth start, is a 3yr-old filly by Elusive City from Kiwi Flair, by Brocco.
