Proven winter galloper Miss Three Stars showed how potent she can be on rain-affected tracks with a runaway win in yesterday's Wairio Cup at Ascot Park.

The Tommy Beckett-trained mare made it career win No10 in yesterday's feature, thanks to a a nicely judged ride by regular jockey Samantha Wynne. It was her ninth win on the 7yr-old.

Beckett simply believes Miss Two Stars shows her best with Wynne aboard.

''That's her ninth win with Sam on, which is quite something,'' he said.

''She is a very quirky mare but Sam gets on with her so well. We've tried quite a few other riders but it just seems like she will only run for Sam.

Miss Three Stars missed out on a third straight Riverton Cup win last month, but Beckett is now turning his attention towards completing back-to-back Winter Cup wins at Riccarton, on August 5.

''She's off for a two-week break now, then we will bring her back and get her ready for a 1600 metre race at Riccarton.

''After that she can go to Ashburton and then Oamaru which should have her cherry ripe for the Winter Cup at Riccarton in August.

''If she is in this sort of form and gets the right track we might just be able to make it back-to-back wins in the race, which would be very special.''

The Jim Curran-trained Rumpelstiltskin won yesterday's open sprint, the Wairio Plate, thanks to a good front-running ride from Courtney Barnes.

Barnes had the 5yr-old in front soon after the start and rated the horse to perfection, holding off the finishes of placegetters Tomm Jones and Shaara.

Barnes took a different approach to get the Brian and Shane Anderton-trained Taieri Gem home in the opening race.

Taieri Gem jumped quickly and was soon in front, but Barnes chose to take a trail and let Verify run to the lead in the early stages.

Barnes angled Taieri Gem across the leader's heels before the home turn, and the pair then ran away to win by three lengths.

Both of Barnes' winners were sired by White Robe Lodge stallion Gallant Guru.

A group of mostly Dunedin-based owners made the most of their three-pronged attack on race 7 at Ascot Park, yesterday.

Both the Odi Et Amo Racing Partnership and Trodmore Partnership No2 syndicates are made up of similar mixes of relatively new and hardy Otago racing enthusiasts.

The syndicates went into the race represented by The Energizer, Odi Et Amo and Revenge, who all lined up from Kelvin Tyler's Riverton stable.

Odi Et Amo emerged the winner, while The Energizer ran on from well back into fourth.

Revenge battled into ninth placing, but will be better suited when he lines up over hurdles again in his next start.

Tyler also trained Vice Marshall and Sir Jack Remington to win. Both were ridden by Terry Moseley.
