Warren Gatland is set to become the second New Zealander to coach the British and Irish Lions after reportedly being offered the role for the side's tour of Australia next year.

The BBC reported that the Wales coach, who led the side to their second Grand Slam under his charge last weekend, was interviewed for the role last week and is set to be announced as the Lions coach next month.

Gatland's Wales won their third Six Nations title in eight years, backing up an impressive effort at last year's Rugby World Cup where they reached the semifinals before falling to France.

The Lions will play nine matches, including three tests, on their tour of Australia which begins in June next year.

Former All Black coach Sir Graham Henry was the first New Zealander to take charge of the Lions, in their last tour to Australia in 2001. Australia won the three-match series 2-1.
