Abby Finch has no plans to take it easy on the boys.

The 11-year-old is one of 10 girls playing for the Alhambra-Union year 6 teams, the Broncos and Mustangs.

There has been a big push to get more girls involved in rugby and Alhambra-Union has embraced the opportunity to widen its player base, club president Ronnie Proctor said.

"We’ve had 10 girls join and it has been amazing.

"They’ve been integral members of the team and really good rugby players," he said.

"Eilis Doyle, at the Otago Rugby Football Union, has been doing a great job going around schools and getting girls into rugby.

"She has also been running girls-only rugby on a Sunday and there has been a great influx of girls doing that.

"It is just getting them into the game and making sure they feel included.

"They hold their own and they are probably just as strong as the boys in our grade."

Abby, who plays in the forwards, has been playing rugby for "about six years" but this is her first year at Alhambra-Union.

She plays for the Broncos and said it was fun to play with the boys.

And, "no", she will not being taking it easy on them "because they don’t take it easy on us".

Fair enough, too.
