What’s an All Black squad without a bolter or two?

Apparently, an All Blacks squad is going to be named on Sunday. How, who and where they are going to play appears unanswered but, never mind, there are issues to digest.

Rugby writer Steve Hepburn looks at five players who could be bolters into this year’s All Black squad.

Ash Dixon

How does a veteran hooker, who blew out 32 candles yesterday and has been floating around Super Rugby for years, even get a look in? By playing some outstanding footy for the Highlanders and leading his side to some impressive performances in Super Rugby Aotearoa. Dixon is having a great year and has kept All Black Liam Coltman on the bench.

Chance of it happening: Slim.

Finlay Christie

To many, he just looks like a small man who cannot make many breaks and possesses an inaccurate kicking game. Others, though, see him as a lively halfback who carries out the basics well. He came into the Blues team near the end of the season and did little wrong. The first two All Black halfbacks are clearcut but Brad Weber has been trying too hard and could be vulnerable.

Chance: Moderate.

They were said to have plenty of potential did the Umaga-Jensen twins. But injury kept getting in the way. However, Peter made it on the field this season - Thomas did not - and playing for the Hurricanes, did all that was asked of him. A very strong runner, who breaks tackles and connects with those around him.

Chance: Just above zero.

Marino Mikaele-Tu’u

Seems to have come a long way in a very short time but had been with the Highlanders since 2018 and was always seen as a project. But has plenty of ticker and has made massive strides this year. Has made some large metres with ball in hand and also valuable on the defensive side of the game.

Chance: Crowded out.

Cullen Grace

Has a couple of things in his favour. Plays for a champion team and has plenty of talent. Was injured in the early stages of Super Rugby Aotearoa but before that had put together a more than solid resume. Has a tough and aggressive style every side needs.
Chance: Possible.
