Round eight of the Dunedin division 1 competition threw up some cliffhangers.
Southern halfback Mackenzie Palmer kicked a drop goal in the last act of the game to clinch a 24-21 win against University at Bathgate Park.
It was a topsy-turvy game, but the home side had the better of the set pieces and fought back from 21-14 down to retain the VG Cavanagh Memorial.
Green Island trailed Kaikorai 21-7 at halftime but rallied to win 29-27 at Bishopscourt.Zingari-Richmond bounced back from a 92-12 drubbing against Taieri last week to beat Alhambra-Union 36-34 in another tense match.
The final game was a blowout win. Taieri dispatched Dunedin 57-21 at Kettle Park.
