The Southern backs were too speedy and skilled and ran rings around Pirates with a 10-try 65-8 win in Dunedin Premier rugby at Hancock Park today.
First five-eighth Ben Patston impressed with his long touch finders and his accurate goal kicking and scored 20 of Southern's points. Wing Josh Gordon scored two tries.
The big upset of the day was at Watson Park when lock Hale T-Pole scored a last minute try to give Harbour a 25-21 win over University A.
Flanker Nick Peacock scored two of Dunedin's seven tries when Zingari-Richmond was beaten 53-37 at Kettle Park.
In other games Alhambra Union held off a late surge by Kaikorai to win 33-27.
Taieri won the Speight's Mug when they scored 14 tries to beat Green Island 96-0 at Miller Park.
Hooker Henry Park scored 34 of Taieri's points.
Taieri lead the competition with 40 points and are followed by Southern 38, Dunedin 37, University A and Alhambra-Union 27, Kaikorai 22, Harbour 21, Zingari-Richmond 18, Pirates 5, Green Island 0.
