With Otago's ITM Cup campaign having come to an end in with the loss to Counties Manukau in the Championship final, ODT Online contributor Jeff Cheshire gives his player ratings for the season.

Tony Ensor: 6/10: Was at times brilliant with his ability to create something from nothing and showed great pace to make for some memorable moments. But was also shaky on defence and at times took poor options. A great prospect and once he develops more consistency will be a very good player.

Marshall Suckling: 6/10: Always busy, getting through plenty of work and was always reliable. He doesn't possess the X-Factor of many of the other wingers, but made up for it with commitment and consistency.

Buxton Popoalii: 7/10: Electric, simply electric, cutting through defences every time he touched the ball. Was outstanding and added spark to the backline, proving the catalyst for many of the tries that dazzled opponents.

Jayden Spence: 6.5/10: Tough on defence, reading plays well and tackled strongly. Was solid on attack as well, improving on a good start in 2011.

Glenn Dickson stepped up to captain the side after Paul Grant was injured.

Glenn Dickson: 6.5/10: Had his best season attacking-wise, showing another dimension to his game and creating plenty of play through the midfield. Also stepped up to take the captaincy after Paul Grant was ruled out, a job he did well and always provided an intelligent head in the backline. Was reliable back-up kicker to Hayden Parker and would still rate as one of the top kickers in New Zealand despite being second best on his team. Slipped off some tackles at times though, some of which were crucial.

Hayden Parker: 7.5/10: Showed himself to be one of the best kickers in the country both at goal and in field. Set his backline up well and tackled courageously all season.

Peter Breen: 6/10: Served as Parker's backup and did so well, adding spark when introduced and kicked well when asked to.

Fumiaki Tanaka: 8/10: Got better as the season went on to the point where he was outstanding towards the end. Provided quick service at times with messy ball, allowing the backs to stretch defences the way they did. Kicked well and began to run more towards the end of the season when
his form was as good as any halfback in the competition.

Paul Grant: 8/10: Led from the front well and was always busy, popping up regularly with his strong ball carries. Had his season cruelly cut short and was missed in every game thereafter.

Buxton Popoalii dazzled more than one defence throughout the season.

Gareth Evans: 7.5/10: Started slowly but after an outstanding game against North Harbour was a key player for the rest of the season. Strong carrying the ball, outstanding at the breakdown, showed a great turn of pace and was the best of the lineout forwards with his explosiveness off the ground.

Lee Allan: 6.5/10: Tackled a lot and well in every game he played. His work rate on defence was really quite phenomenal. Needs to develop a linking game on attack to become the complete package.

TJ Ioane: 6/10: A mixed bag, proving strong with ball in hand and getting go-forward but also made far too many errors which need to be cut out of his game.

Adam Hill: 6/10: Got through his work and did what was asked of him. Solid rather than spectacular but not much to fault.

Rob Verbakel: 7.5/10: Outstanding all year. Got through a lot of work, showed great ball skills and was safe at kickoff time.

Tom Franklin: 7.5/10: Very much in the same vein as Verbakel. The locks were a real strength of Otago this year. At just 22 years old, he's only going to get better too.

Justin Ives: 6/10: Had a good work rate and performed well when given his chances. Unfortunately found himself behind Verbakel, Franklin and Grant for a lot of the season before an injury ruled him out towards the end.

Fumiaki Tanaka, one of the standouts for the Razorbacks this year.

Tama Tuirirangi: 7/10: A strong, mobile prop who got through plenty of work and was good at the breakdown. Added much needed experience to what was a young team.

Aki Seiuli: 6/10: Improved as the season went on and was playing some good rugby towards the end. Popped up around the field and was part of a dominant scrum in the final.

Liam Coltman: 8/10: Had a champion season, throwing himself into everything and showed high levels of commitment. Also was able to cover both hooker and prop. Only set back was his lineout throwing.

Sam Anderson-Heather: 7/10: Was physical and played in a 100 miles per hour type frame of mind. Got through plenty of work and was also the best of the lineout throwers.

Shota Horie: 6/10: Solid all season and showed good commitment, never giving up on a chase or failing to support his man.

No rating due to limited game time:

Ben Smith: Dangerous on attack and strong on defence. Was a pity he couldn't play more but deservedly holds a spot in the All Blacks after playing some outstanding rugby over the past few years.

Matt Faddes: Saw limited game time but did little wrong when he was on. Remains an exciting player as he has shown with some good performances at club level.

Tamati Ellison: Outstanding when he played. Dangerous on attack and has great hands whilst also being strong on defence and reliable to tidy up loose ball.

Michael Collins: Had a few appearances but was more of a development player in 2012. Still did little wrong and showed some very nice touches in his only start against Manawatu.

Brad Weber: Found himself behind the outstanding Fumiaki Tanaka all season so saw limited game time. Was good when he played and showed off his fast pass. Is another exciting halfback very much in the Aaron Smith mould and will no doubt contribute to Otago rugby for many years should he stay.

Hugh Blake: Another exciting young player who struggled to get game time this year. Didn't flatter himself with his first two performances but showed vast improvements in what was by far his best game against Auckland, where he was harshly sin-binned but played well. Was a member of the New Zealand Under 20 team and has shown himself to have a very good all round game at club level.

Adam Thomson: Wasn't always at his best, but showed in the second half of the semifinal and for the most part during the final just how good he can be, particularly on defence.

Jackson Hemopo: The 19 year old came in for the semifinal as cover and was outstanding. So much so that he was retained for the final. Backed himself with ball in hand and coped well with the physicality. Definitely a player to watch.

Scott Manson: Played early in the season and was reasonably solid, was missed as propping stocks became low as the season progressed.

Jacob Ellison: Made a huge impact upon his introduction every time he played. Had it not been for injury would have been a regular starter. A strong tackler and a good scrummager. Let's hope we see more of him in 2013.
