Otago's season hit another roadbump last night with the loss to Tasman. ODT Online rugby contributor Jeff Cheshire rates the players' performances.

Buxton Popoalii 5/10: Had a quiet night, mainly kicked what ball came to him but made a couple of good runs early on. Did well to recover and save a try after a defensive lapse.

Matt Faddes 4/10: Made a couple of mistakes, including a dropped ball 20 seconds in, but never really got a chance to be in the game. Did well to save a try under pressure just prior to being taken off.

Jayden Spence 5/10: Pretty solid, made his tackles and was reasonably tidy on defence albeit with one dropped ball. Didn't look like creating much, but was never really in a position to create much either.

Peter Breen 5/10: Kicked well in general play, other than that was similar to the other backs in that all he really got a chance to do was tackle.

Kieran Moffat 4/10: A mixed bag, strong in contact and made a couple of good runs, but a reckless tackle saw him yellow carded and a lack of awareness at the breakdown led to Tasman's third try.

Hayden Parker 5.5/10: Kicked his goals and looked the most lively of the backs, but didn't have much to work with and consequently had a tough night, also missed a tackle which led to a try.

Fumiaki Tanaka 6/10: Mainly just passed and did so well considering the low quality ball he was getting from his forwards for the majority of the game.

Paul Grant 5.5/10: Tried hard, but didn't get too many chances in the open and was mainly confined to tackling in close. Another who just didn't have much to work with.

Willis Scott 5/10: Made his tackles and did so well, but wasn't quite the presence Lee Allan has been over the past three weeks.

TJ Ioane 6.5/10: Fought hard and was probably Otago's best player for the 56 minutes he was on the park. Ran strongly, made his tackles and secured a breakdown turnover. The jury's still out on whether he's better as a starter or as an impact player.

Tom Franklin 5/10: Got pulled relatively early, with the coaches perhaps wanting to add some extra physicality in the tight. Made his tackles though and claimed one memorable kickoff.

Charlie O'Connell 6.5/10: Was involved all night, went looking for tackles to make and supported play well on attack. Along with Ioane, was one of the bright patches for Otago in an otherwise dull performance.

Tama Tuirirangi 4.5/10: Got through enough work around the field, prominent on defence and got a breakdown turnover, but the scrum was under pressure, particularly in the first half which the props have to take some responsibility for.

Tom Donnelly.

Sam Anderson-Heather 5/10: Tried to get involved but never really imposed himself on the game in the way we know he can.

Craig Millar 4.5/10: Made a few good tackles in the open and scored a try, but struggled at scrum time and didn't give the backs anything to work with from this department.

Liam Coltman 4.5/10: Made an impact upon his introduction, looking for tackles and runs to make, but also made a reckless tackle which saw him yellow carded, which he loses marks for.

Aki Seuli 5/10: Came on for the last 14 minutes with the team already trailing by a fair amount, but got around the field well, made a few runs and supported play.

Tom Donnelly 6.5/10: Was brought on for the second half and his physicality made a difference. Tackled well, while also tidying up a bit of loose ball.

Lee Allan 5.5/10: Had a tough time coming on when he did, mainly just tackled as per usual.

Josh Renton 6/10: Played 20 minutes and was pretty solid during this time, passing alright and not making mistakes.

Tei Walden 5/10: Made a few tackles, but never really saw any ball to attack with as Tasman were well on top by the time he came on.

Fa'asiu Fuatai 5.5/10: Fairly solid once more, had one or two chances with ball in hand in which he did okay but was shut down reasonably quickly.
