Plenty of home games for ABs

After just two tests in the country last year, the All Blacks will be home bound for much of this year.

The schedule for the Rugby Championships was released yesterday by national unions and Sanzaar, and shows a competition which will be spread across three countries.

The 12-match tournament will be played across South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

South Africa will host two matches while Australia and New Zealand will host five matches each.

After the All Blacks play three tests in July against Tonga (one test) and Fiji (two tests), they will then play the three-match Bledisloe Cup series.

The opening game of the Bledisloe Cup series will take place in Auckland on August 7, and will not be part of the Rugby Championship.

The first Rugby Championship test will be against Australia and will take place in Perth on August 21.

The third match of the Bledisloe Cup series, which also doubles as a Rugby Championship game, will be played in Wellington on August 28.

The All Blacks will then have to be asked to play four tests in as many weeks. With restrictions around quarantine, there is an emphasis on playing games and not wasting time.

There will be back-to-back tests against Argentina, at Eden Park on September 11 and at Wellington on September 18.

The Springboks are then set to come to New Zealand with a game against the All Blacks in Dunedin on September 25 followed by a second test between the old foes at Eden Park on October 2.

The All Blacks are then scheduled to head to Europe at the end of the year and have games lined up against Wales, France and Italy.

Ireland may also be an opponent on the end of the year tour, with New Zealand Rugby looking to make as much money as possible with the national team back in action.

The Springboks will host Argentina for two tests in August. Sanzaar decided it was not possible to host tests in Argentina because of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

All Blacks coach Ian Foster said to media in Auckland yesterday he was looking forward to the home tests and was excited to be playing the Springboks.

He said experienced All Blacks Beauden Barrett and Brodie Retallick were available to be picked for the July tests.

Sam Cane is unlikely to be picked for any of the home tests after injuring his pectoral muscle, but may make it on to the end of year tour.
