Accurate goal kicking by first five-eighth Ben Patston made the difference and helped Southern beat Zingari-Richmond 34-27. He kicked six goals and scored 14 of Southern's points.
It helped Southern to maintain its unbeaten record and stay at the top of the competition.
Liam Edwards last minute penalty kick was ruled outside the posts in a controversial end to the game between Dunedin and Kaikorai that ended in a 16-all draw.
First five-eighth Stephen Fenemore played a key role in University A's first win of the season when he scored all the students points in its 19-10 win over Harbour.
Fenemore scored a try, kicked a conversion and four penalty goals.
Two late tries by wing Shannon Young gave Taieri the bonus point when they beat a gallant and injury plagued Pirates 25-3.
