Rugby: Announcement of Otago coach put on hold

The announcement on who will coach the Otago team next year has been delayed.

The coach was expected to be named yesterday, but Otago Rugby Football Union chief executive Richard Reid said there were still some issues to work through.

He could not confirm exactly when the coach would be named. It is expected Steve Martin will be re-appointed Otago coach, with Bruce Carvell as his assistant.

The duo coached Otago this year to a disappointing 10th place in the Air New Zealand Cup.

It is believed former Otago captain and hooker David Latta may have been asked to be involved in the coaching team.

Latta, who has played 161 games for Otago, applied for the coaching position, along with former Otago assistant coach Phil Young and Alhambra-Union premiership winning coach Mike Moeahu.

Martin has coached Otago for three years, while Carvell came on board midway through the 2007 season, when Glenn Moore was appointed Highlanders coach.

Otago made the semifinals in 2006, the quarterfinals in 2007 and 10th this season, failing to make the play-offs.

Martin had indicated he wished to continue in the role, wanting to come back and work with some of the players he had introduced to the team over the past couple of seasons.

The job is for one year only, as the Air New Zealand Cup is set to change in 2010, with the Super 14 also likely to change in structure and playing dates.
