Rugby: Hay notable omission from squad

Maheno flanker Ross Hay was the most notable omission from a 25-strong North Otago squad named on Saturday.

The extended squad will prepare for its game against Otago in Oamaru on June 25.

Hay is still playing club rugby but missed selection.

He has played 114 first-class games. Hay made his debut in 1999 and, in his long career, was selected in the Heartland XV and named Heartland Rugby Player of the Year.

Sixteen of those named have not yet played for North Otago and include two South Africans who play for Kurow, No 8 Warwick Nels and lock Wesley Wells.

Harry Fry (Old Boys), Rob Payne (Athletic) and Chris Bart (Excelsior) join fellow Englishman Ben Patston in the squad.

Other newcomers are halfback Cam Parata (Maheno), flanker Sean Conlan (Valley), lock Aaron McKay (Valley), prop Gareth Isbister (Kurow), prop Dan Groundwater (Valley), prop Jamie Rhodes (Excelsior), utility back Manu Taiti (Old Boys), flanker Cameron Rowland (Valley), first five-eighth Rob Waldie (Kurow) and No 8 Palavi Tahaape (Old Boys).

The backs are Kilifi Fangupo, Patston, Soane Kasanova, Faaitu Tuamoheloa, Billy Guyton, Hamish McKenzie, Chris Talanoa, Jason Forrest, Lemi Masoe, Parata, Payne, Bart, Waldie, Taiti.

The forwards are Palenapa Mafi, Eric Duff, Tevita Fifita, Ralph Darling, Josh Collier, Aisake Fonua, Uilisoni Tahitua, Dylan Winter, Fry, Nel, Wells, Conlan, McKay, Isbister, Groundwater, Rhodes, Leitaua Limuloa, Rowland and Tahaape.
