Rugby: Hull the hero in McGlashan win

John McGlashan captain Nathan Hull was the hero when he dashed 80m down the touch line to score the bonus try in the Highlanders First XV rugby competition today.

The No 8 forward played an inspirational game as John McGlashan beat Verdon College 24-3 in Dunedin.

Openside flanker Nick Ryder was quick to the breakdown and scored a try with skilled backing up.

The McGlashan team was more mobile and its forwards won good ball and the fleet-footed backline made ground with the ball in hand.

McGlashan started with the same intensity they showed against Kings High School last weekend and scored three tries in the first 15 minutes to take control.

The inside back combination of Braydon Pennycook and Alan Steel were tidy and wing Sam Sinclair had pace out wide.

Otago Boys went on a romp to score 12 tries when they beat South Otago 75-0 with first five-eighth Lance Taylor scoring three tries and kicked four conversions to score 23 points.

Openside flanker Brodie Hume was up in support of his backline and scored two tries.

Dunstan moved into fifth place on the points table when it scored seven tries to beat St Kevin's College 45-9 with halfback Tom Dougherty scoring a try and kicking five conversions.

Otago Boys moved into second place in the competition behind Southland Boys while Kings dropped back to third with Gore in fourth place.

The results were: Southland Boys' 38, Kings 3; Central Southland College 13, Kavanagh College 0; Dunstan 45 St Kevin's 9; Otago Boys 75, South Otago 0; Gore 25, Waitaki Boys' 6; John McGlashan 24, Verdon College 3.

The points table after nine games is: Southland Boy's 41, Otago Boy's 38, Kings 37, Gore 34, Dunstan 22, Waitaki Boy's 19, John McGlashan 19, Verdon 18, Kavanagh College 9, Central Southland College 12, South Otago 10, Kavanagh College 9, St Kevin's 5.
