Kaikorai won the trophy last year when Southern was beaten 26-20 and will be keen to retain it in the club's trophy cabinet at Bishopscourt.
But the odds favour Southern after its strong recent form with wins against University A 24-3, Zingari-Richmond 40-13 and a whopping 77-23 win over Alhambra-Union last Sunday.
Kaikorai started the season in style with four wins on the trot but a series of injuries to key players has seen the wheels fall off and it has lost its last three games to Taieri 34-7, University A 44-10 and Zingari-Richmond 26-22.
The Kaikorai forwards have won good ball at set pieces but slow distribution has hampered the backline.
The return of halfback Renton should solve the problem because he is noted for his quick and accurate passing of ball to the backline.
Harris is an intelligent loose forward and his ability at the breakdown will be crucial for Kaikorai.
Southern has also had its share of injuries but the depth of its squad means that it has not been affected to the same extent as other teams.
It has a big and powerhouse pack that will win good ball and strong players such as No8 Mika Mafi and Ben Carpenter who can make ground with the ball in hand.
Southern will be brimming with confidence after scoring 12 tries when it beat Alhambra-Union 77-23 last Sunday.
A key player in the backline is Tei Walden, who knows how to tear defences apart and has scored six tries this winter.
Fullback Josh Ioane is skilled on the counterattack and scored two tries against Alhambra-Union.
Southern has scored 45 tries in seven games this winter while Kaikorai has scored 28.
Frank Cadman was president of the Otago Rugby Football Union in 1997 when future All Black coach Tony Gilbert's team won Kaikorai's first premier banner since 1921 by beating Southern 12-7 in the final at Carisbrook. Cadman was the third ORFU president in a 12-year period to die in office. The others were Alan Mills (1985) and Trevor Boyle (1990).
Cadman had ties to both clubs.
He played premier rugby for Southern from 1951-54 as a prop and captained the team in his final year.
Cadman followed his son Dave to Kaikorai in the 1970s and helped coach the Kaikorai premier side for 10 years.
The first Frank Cadman Memorial match between the two clubs was played in 1998.
