Rugby: Shock loss knocks Varsity A off perch

Zingari-Richmond caused the boil over in Dunedin club rugby today when they beat University A 15-6 at Montecillo and knocked the students off their top perch in the Gallaway Trophy.

The win allowed Southern to sneak ahead of the students and snatch the Gallaway Trophy from them.

Southern gained four championship points when they beat Alhambra-Union 10-3 at the University Oval. This put them on 47 points, the same as the students.

But because Southern beat University A 10-6 in the round-robin game they win the Gallaway Trophy.

Southern won the Gallaway Trophy competition on 47 points and are followed by University A 47, Harbour 46, , Dunedin 42, Alhambra-Union 41, Pirates 33, Kaikorai 27, Zingari-Richmond 19 , Green Island 15 and Taieri 12

The top six teams for the championship round have been decided. The draw for next week's quarter-finals is: Southern v Pirates, University A v Alhambra-Union and Harbour v Dunedin. All games will be at home grounds.

In the other key games today Harbour sneaked ahead of Pirates 3-0 when first five-eighth Brenton Kramer kicked a penalty goal, and flanker Jon Crossan played an outstanding game when Dunedin beat Taieri 15-6.
