Otago back Ben Smith is not out of the All Black picture for the early-season internationals, and it appears versatility may be the ace in his pack.

Smith's name was not read out on Sunday for the first All Black squad of the season, but he was added to the training squad for a three-day camp which began in Auckland yesterday.

Smith, along with Blues outside back Rene Ranger, will train with the All Blacks while the squad is in camp.

The pair are in the squad to provide injury cover for squad members Richard Kahui and Mils Muliaina.

Kahui is recovering from a chest injury while Muliaina, who is looking to return to rugby following his thumb injury, has a calf strain.

Smith (24), who played for the Highlanders mainly on the wing this season, appears to now be a midfield option for the All Blacks.

He played second five-eighth for his club side, Green Island, last Saturday and has been selected in that position for the New Zealand Barbarians against New Zealand Maori in Whangarei on June 12.

Smith moved into centre for one game for the Highlanders this season, but saw limited ball as the Highlanders fell to a heavy 31-3 loss to the Brumbies in Canberra.

Two former Otago and Highlanders players have signed for Auckland for the national provincial competition.

Halfback Toby Morland and first five-eighth Mathew Berquist have both been nabbed by Auckland coach Mark Anscombe.

Morland played 47 games for Otago until 2008, and also played 23 times for the Highlanders, before he was drafted by the Chiefs in 2009. He then left for a short-term contract with Munster, which finished late last year.

Berquist last played for Otago in 2004 and has turned out for Hawkes Bay in recent years and had been keen to move overseas. He has been drafted by the Highlanders over the past two seasons.
