Rugby: Spirit not taking anything for granted

The Otago Spirit sits top of the table, having bagged three wins from three games.

Next on the agenda are the Hawkes Bay Tuis, a side yet to record a victory and struggling to score any points.

So logic suggests it will be a straightforward victory for the women in blue and gold this afternoon in Napier and the side will remain on top of the ladder.

But Otago coach John Hyde is taking nothing for granted.

''They have lost both of these games which would suggest they are struggling and I have seen a bit of them on television,'' he said.

''But we are entering the unknown. You have to be careful. Anything can happen.

"We are confident but you've got to take each team as they come along. They can all play well on their day.''

The Spirit had a convincing 37-17 win over Counties-Manukau last week, winning the match through its tigerish play at the breakdown and the ability of the team to find some holes in the oppositions's backline defence.

More of that is on order today although forecast showers may upset Otago's plans.

The side's loose forwards have had a couple of changes forced on them - young flanker Georgia Mason is out with an elbow injury and blindside colleague Rebecca Todd has a personal commitment.

Zoe Whatarau and Maddie Finch come into the team and will be helped out by captain Angie Sisifa in trying to secure the loose ball.

Otago will look to use its powerful scrum to get the better of Hawkes Bay and fitness is bound to be an issue.

First five-eighth and Black Fern Victoria Subritzsky-Nafatali is a key player for Otago with her ability to find gaps and put her outsides in the right position.

Many Black Ferns of recent years have either retired or are not playing in the competition so a player of the class of Subritzsky-Nafatali is invaluable to her team.

Otago will want to play well as it has some tough games ahead, taking on Canterbury next Sunday at Forsyth Barr Stadium, the curtain-raiser for the ITM Cup game between Otago and Waikato.

Tomorrow's match is played at the early time of 11am at the Tareha Reserve. Otago returns home late tonight, missing out on watching the Ranfurly Shield match tomorrow in Napier.
