Victoria Subritzky-Nafatali is set to play in the black jersey on the biggest stage.

Subritzky-Nafatali (22) is one of three Otago players named in the Black Ferns squad to compete at the Women's Rugby World Cup in France from August 1 to 17.

She is joined in the 26-strong squad by two other Otago players, fellow first five-eighth Kelly Brazier and front-rower Kathleen Wilton.

Despite already knowing she would be included in the squad following the home test series, she said it was still an ''honour'' to get confirmation she would play for her country.

''It is always a good feeling every time you get the call-up.''

She has played for the Black Ferns for two years, but the tournament is one she will not be taking lightly.

The Black Ferns will compete in a pool with the United States, Kazakhstan and Ireland. The other teams might be ranked much lower, but Subritzky-Nafatali said every game would be tough.

''You can never take it lightly,'' she said.

The Black Ferns played Australia, Samoa and Canada in last month's series and showed impressive form, winning all four tests convincingly.

Subritzky-Nafatali acknowledged there were big expectations on the defending champions but said it would benefit the team.

''I think it will just make everyone train harder,'' she said.

Subritzky-Nafatali and Otago team-mate Brazier were the only two first five-eighths selected in the squad.

Brazier has been part of the national side for five years, but Subritzky-Nafatali is hardly a rookie, having played for the Otago Spirit since she was 15.

She said the starting position would be given to the best player for each match.

''The coach will always pick the right team for the right game.''

Black Ferns coach Brian Evans said the home series had been an opportunity to test combinations before the World Cup.

''I think across the park, we have developed a really good team and we want to use the ball like most New Zealand teams,'' Evans said.

The squad members will continue training and playing for their provincial teams before gathering at a three-day camp beginning on July 22, then heading to France.
