
They trailed by 16 points at one stage before dominating the final quarter of the game to beat St Kevin’s 36-28 in Queenstown.
Wakatipu showed some spark early but St Kevin’s dominated the middle stages of the game.
Second five Ben Gillies scored twice and flankers Michael Woodhouse and Flynn Sanford also crossed the line as St Kevin’s held the whip hand with a 28-12 lead.
But Wakatipu had other ideas. They rattled on four unanswered tries to fly past the Oamaru school and post another impressive win.
Openside flanker Tom Rannard put in a tireless shift for Wakatipu, and prop Finlay Woods did a lot of work in the tight.
First five and captain Charlie Rule had another impressive outing with the boot and around the field.
It was a weekend of tight action all round.
South Otago pipped Waitaki Boys’ 43-42 in a seven-tries-to-six thriller in Balclutha.
Halfback Archie Valli scored a try and kicked four conversions for the home side, while reserve Apisi Tapa’atoutai scored two tries for Waitaki.
There was another close call in Dunedin, where John McGlashan beat Dunstan 35-33, despite No 8 Jedi Stewart scoring four tries for Dunstan.
Winger Nicholas Hammond scored two tries to lead Central Southland to a 30-27 win over Taieri, and Hokonui beat Cromwell 36-8.
Southland Boys’ made it seven straight in the South Island Boys Schools competition with a 36-14 win over Christ’s College in Invercargill.
The powerhouse Invercargill school are now seven points clear at the top of the table in the breakaway competition’s first season.
Otago Boys’ slipped to a 39-27 loss to St Bede’s, and King’s were thumped 59-7 by second-placed Christchurch Boys’, who have a couple of games in hand.
