Dunedin trio to represent NZ in age-group champs

Three of Dunedin's most promising swimmers are set to take on Australia.

Jessica Scott (15), Madison Wills (14) and Erika Fairweather (14) have been chosen for the New Zealand team to attend Australia's state team age-group championships.

The trio leaves for the event in Canberra at the beginning of October.

For Fairweather and Wills - pupils at Kavanagh College and Otago Girls' High School respectively - it will be their first time representing New Zealand.

It will be St Hilda's Collegiate pupil Scott's second international competition. She competed at the same event last year.

The trio were picked based on their performances at the national age-group championships in April.

All excelled at the championships, Fairweather and Scott having plenty of success for Neptune, while Wills was prominent for Kiwi.

For Fairweather it was a second impressive selection in a short space of time.

Earlier in the year she had been the only Otago swimmer chosen in the initial Youth Olympics squad.

Needing to be between 14 and 18 years old, she only just made the age cut-off.

She will compete alongside 21 others - some of whom are four years older - for the four spots to go to Buenos Aires.

Her performances at the New Zealand open championships in July will be key to determining whether she gets one of them.

Both Scott and Wills will also compete at the open championships.
