Tori Peeters has claimed another title, although her ultimate goal has eluded her.

The Taieri javelin thrower competed in the Commonwealth Games trials at last night's Cooks Classic in Whanganui. Her throw of 53.44m enabled her to take first ahead of North Harbour's Stephanie Wrathall, who threw 51.24m.

However, it was the Games B qualification mark of 59.70m the 23-year-old had been chasing.

With a personal best of 56.84m, the national record, the distance was always going to require a big effort.

However, even achieving the qualifying standard does not guarantee a Games spot as Athletics New Zealand is able to send a team of only 19.

Peeters was not the only Otago thrower to have success. Laura Overton finished third in the same event with a throw of 41.90m.

Hill City-University's Fiona Centers finished third in the 100m in an impressive 12.18sec.

In section two of the 100m, Maddy Spence was seventh in 13.44sec.

Spence also ran 59.82sec to be the third-fastest woman in the mixed 400m.

Taieri's Christina Ashton finished sixth in the 100m hurdles in 15.25sec.
