A vote on the controversial childcare policy which would see city councillors and community board members’ childcare paid for by ratepayers is likely to take place before October’s elections.

A city council spokesman said staff were aiming to produce a report for councillor consideration on September 26.

If adopted by the council, councillors and community board members would be eligible to an allowance only if their child is under 14 and the childcare is not provided by a family member.

Childcare allowances are also limited to $6000 a year per child.

The Star has received numerous letters in opposition to the policy since it published a story on it in July.

City councillor Aaron Keown thought the policy could become an election issue leading up to October’s elections but did not see it as a “game-changer.”

Cr Keown said he was leaning toward voting against it.

“I just don’t think for the life of me that ratepayers should be paying for the childcare of elected members,” he said.
