More than 300 quilts of all shapes and sizes are on show until Sunday at the Papanui High School hall.
The exhibition, held every two years, aims to showcase the region's top handmade quilts.
A variety of styles and themes, ranging from the traditional to the more modern, are on show at the exhibition which is open from 10am to 4pm.
Canterbury Patchwork and Quilting Guild president Ros Taylor says the colourful art form is not only for older people. Many young quilters are also taking up the hobby.
"There is such a resurgence of interest in crafts," Taylor said.
"After the lockdowns, people have come to appreciate how it's a good way to spend time."
Taylor said quilting can be meditative: "It's a very good stress release and it's just fun.
"And then you end up with these beautiful things to look at."
The theme is Winter Stars, with quilters challenged to create their own interpretations.
The local quilts were judged and awarded ribbons at the start of the exhibition on Wednesday.
Best in show went to an intricate entry called Experiencing Epilepsy, which symbolises the brain and the turmoil endured by people with the disorder.
The exhibition runs until Sunday.
