Cancer fundraiser nets more than $10k

A charity netball game in Canterbury has raised more than $10,000 for Selwyn cancer patients.

Lincoln-based netball teams, the Lustys and Springlincs, faced off in a walking netball game on Sunday to raise money for the Selwyn Cancer Society.

The fundraiser was organised by Liz Morrish, who has terminal cancer and has been given only four-to-five months to live.

Liz has lived in Lincoln all her life and wanted to do something to give back to her community. She said she was amazed to see how many people turned up.

“I actually haven’t got words, I really haven’t. Most of the people in that hall I know, it is so wonderful to see everybody together and I’m just blown away. Yeah, totally blown away.”

The 68-year-old was diagnosed with bowel cancer five years ago, and after a number of operations thought she was in the clear.

In December 2022, doctors discovered the cancer had metastasized into her lungs.

Liz also has a tumour in her lower groin and in the past fortnight found out the cancer has spread even further.
