Dunedin’s 100-Plus People Who Care group continues to make a difference through direct donations to local charities and community organisations.

At its quarterly meetings, the group hears presentations from three charities and members, who each contribute $100 to a donation pool, vote on which organisation will receive the funds.

The next meeting of the 100-Plus People Who Care is on Wednesday, May 21, at 7pm at Otago Golf Club in Balmacewen Rd. Dunedin founder Nick Berryman said the group would hear presentations from Orokonui Ecosanctuary, Cargill Enterprises, and Otago Community Hospice at the meeting.

"There are so many incredible organisations coming to us and it is a real privilege to hear about the extraordinary work they are doing," Mr Berryman said.

In its February funding round, the 100-Plus People Who Care group selected Dunedin’s Edmund Rice Camps to receive a donation of $5454 towards covering the cost of accommodation and food at its upcoming July camp.

Edmund Rice Camps Dunedin chairwoman and camp coach Amelia Bresanello said the funds were a vital contribution towards bringing 24 local children aged 9-12 years, 24 youth volunteers aged 17-28 years, and the management team together for the five-day residential camp.

"We take kids in need, for a broad variety of reasons, for a much needed break and some time that is specially for them," Ms Bresanello said.

"It is a good time for everyone to disconnect from devices and enjoy shared experiences, wholesome good fun, and enjoying plentiful good food together.

"Both the little people and the camp leaders have a great experience — it is enormously beneficial for everyone," she said.

Edmund Rice Camps Dunedin have been running since 1991, providing four weeks of low-cost camps each year, at the Otago Youth Adventure Trust facility at Berwick, Waiora Scout Camp and other sites.
