160-year-old school getting makeovers

Outram School may be more than 160 years old, but continuing make-overs keep it looking younger than its pupils.

The Ministry of Education recently called for tenders from contractors to upgrade two classrooms, breakout spaces and toilets at the school.

Principal Kim Allan said the upgrade and modernisation project would be funded by the ministry and was expected to cost more than $100,000.

She said the classrooms were adequate at the moment, but they had wooden window frames and old floor coverings.

She said staff and pupils were looking forward to working in a more open-plan learning environment that was ‘‘lighter, brighter and warmer’’.

‘‘It’s going to be great.’’

The work includes replacing carpet, vinyl and wall linings, installing insulation and double glazed windows and doors/partitions, creating a ‘‘breakout space’’ in the cloakroom area, replacing toilets, hand basins and other fittings and installing LED lighting
