Otago Art Society president Rose Shepard said in a statement society members had been relishing the opportunity to choose from their portfolios and submit a single recent artwork for the ‘‘open’’ themed exhibition.
‘‘The open theme and single entry encourage wide variety in the works submitted, which include painting, 2D and 3D media, digital graphics, printmaking, sculpture, photography, jewellery, textiles, embroidery and stitch,’’ Ms Shepard said.
The ‘‘Autumn Exhibition’’ opens to the public this Saturday, May 2, and runs until May 23, in the society’s galleries, first floor, Dunedin Railway Station.
‘‘The exhibition is named for the season we are currently in, but does not tie artists to this as a theme per se. We are fortunate at OAS to have artists working across so many disciplines,’’ Ms Shepard said.
The exhibition is made possible through the support of stalwart OAS member Joan Hardey, whose name adorns one of the four society galleries.
‘‘Joan Hardey has been a member of the Otago Art Society for more than 60 years.
‘‘As one of our most ardent supporters over many years, it is through her generosity that we can bring this ‘Autumn Exhibition’ to the public.’’
The judge for the competition is local artist Scott Drummond, known for his en plein air landscape paintings.
In addition to the prizewinners, there will be a People’s Choice award voted on by visitors throughout the exhibition.
The Otago Art Society was New Zealand’s first art society, formed in 1876, and celebrates its 150th anniversary this year.
